Ceiling and overhead clearance planning

Updated 2026-10-23 · By Charland & Co.

Quick answer: For overhead moves, plan roughly your height plus about 2 feet (our planning estimate): about 8 feet (96 inches) for a 6-foot person. For equipment, leave 12 inches above the tallest piece. Measure to the lowest point, such as a beam, duct or light, and test your own reach before you buy.

In basements and older apartments, the ceiling is often the tightest limit in a small gym. The guides below show how to measure your ceiling, which equipment fits under 7- and 8-foot ceilings, and how to check overhead moves like pull-ups and presses before you buy. Run your own numbers in the home gym space calculator.
